Oral candidiasis is an infection of the oral cavity caused by Candida species which is a normal constituent of the digestive and vaginal tracts, the commonest being Candida albicans. The incidence varies depending on age and another predisposing factors.

There are three broad groupings of candidiasis
  • Acute candidiasis
  • Chronic candidiasis
  • Angular cheilitis.
Risk factors of Candidiasis include :
  • Impaired salivary gland function
  • Broad-spectrum antibiotics
  • Glucocorticosteroid preparations
  • Birth control pills
  • Tricyclic antidepressants
  • Dentures
  • High carbohydrate diet
  • Smoking
  • Diabetes mellitus
  • Cushing's syndrome
  • Malignancies
  • Immunosuppressive conditions.
