Oral candidiasis is an infection of the oral cavity caused by Candida species which is a normal constituent of the digestive and vaginal tracts, the commonest being Candida albicans. The incidence varies depending on age and another predisposing factors.
There are three broad groupings of candidiasis
- Acute candidiasis
- Chronic candidiasis
- Angular cheilitis.
- Impaired salivary gland function
- Broad-spectrum antibiotics
- Glucocorticosteroid preparations
- Birth control pills
- Tricyclic antidepressants
- Dentures
- High carbohydrate diet
- Smoking
- Diabetes mellitus
- Cushing's syndrome
- Malignancies
- Immunosuppressive conditions.
